Just to dry fit 😂. I kept telling my husband we need to dry fit the tub we’re installing this weekend. We’ll have no shower for 10 people until we get it installed and finished ! Fingers crossed for a one day installed!

I made one out of 1" XPS, caulking, and aluminum tape. Works great, and it was part of a larger project that all told dropped our house's internal temp 4 degrees this summer compared to last without any AC hardware changes. Blackout curtains, this thermal tent (though mine was more of a thermal box), and a full cleaning of the AC system has done the trick and all while dropping the Electric bill since the AC is running better after the cleaning. So colder AND more affordable this summer.

That's not what it's for, for the record. It does do that so he's not wrong, but the reason for this thermal tent is to keep the heat in the attic out of your house, or the heat in your house from leaking so much into the attic. But it's mostly useful with hot attics. When the attic reaches temps in excess of 150 degrees like it does in the south and you start wondering why we don't somehow recycle that heat to cook things without spending $ on gas or electricity, it helps to keep that heat locked up there. Essentially attic doors are only like 1/4" ply panels since the support structure is in the ladder and hinge so the panel doesn't need to be sturdy. And on its edges is just wood panel into a basic frame. You'd think "heat rises, so it won't come down", except heat also expands. The attic is constantly pressing hot air into your house through cracks like a balloon, and also that 1/4" ply is too thin to insulate and made of wood so it doesn't even try, really. In the end this not only makes a better thermal barrier, but also means the ladder itself is not subject to the damaging heat and is likely to last much longer before becoming compromised and collapsing. I made one out of 1" XPS, caulking, and aluminum tape for a fraction of the cost of buying one since I already had a lot of the material on hand from previous work in HVAC and for use in making D&D miniatures terrain.

After contracting my own home i have learned when hiring any sub contractor to make sure they are up to snuff on current industry standards. If they don't know what an ANSI standard is. DO NOT hire them. If your tile layer doesn't know what the NTCA is or your vynal installer does know what the Vynal Siding Institute is, dont hire them. Etc.... Above all if they do not follow the manufactures guidlines of the products they use. don't hire them. This will make it extreamly hard to find someone who actually knows what they are doing because the majority are hacks or the, "I've been doing it this way for 30 years" guy. Well the TCNA manual for Tile laying was a 15 page pamflet in the early 1990s. Now it is an over 400 page manual. Industries change so do products and materials, hence ao do methods. Every single sub I had an issue with had an ego problem. If you have questions on how they would do something and they are not happy to make you feel comfortible with thier work, DO NOT hire them. Be added as an additional insurer to their insurance. Get the documentation you need from their insurance agent before anything happens. That way you can bypass the sub if they refuse to fix their mistake and just go straight to thier insurance. Also get everything communication in writing. Follow up emails or text from phone calls or talking in person verifying what was said. Make the deal that 10% of payment will be witheld until final inspection. Verify after you get an itemized bid that there is nothing more or less that will done on the bid and get that in writing. The whole "well the last guys did this so now I have to do this and it will cost extra" Sorry, take it up with the last guy. Come to the table with a better deal for you we can agree upon to unforseen issues. Also just do a bit of research on their trade from ANSI or other credible organizations and at least know how to avoid the big no nos and ask some questions, use some termonology and know enough that you at least appear to know what you are talking about and they will be less likely to screw around with you. If any contractor has an issue with being held accountible by CYB before hand and they refuse to take your bid, don't feel dishearted, you just dodged a bullet.
